EDHAA Presidents Message
for July 2008
Summer is upon us and it’s HOT, but
I hope this weather has not impacted your artist endeavors, because
the Membership show is approximately 6 weeks away.
A big thank you goes to Bill Monaghan and Don Nicholson for chairing
our last few general meetings, I really appreciate your support
and wiliness to step up to the plate and take over for me.
A big thank you goes to Delores Meldrum who brought some beautiful
art books to sell. We appreciate your generous offer to support
the scholarship fund by the sale of your books.
Paulette Van Schaik and Sherry Huntting – If you were
unable to attend our last general meeting you missed a great demonstration
by Paulette and Sherry. Thanks for demonstrating your classic technique
in the use of Tonal Values to Create Significant art pieces.
Just a reminder…
August
Membership Show Artist Statement - Aug 14, 15, 16 & 18, 19
and 20.
For those members who are in the Membership Show, remember to send
Varya McMillan your updated Artist Statement. The Artist
Statement is not about “You” or a personal explanation
of about what art means to you. It’s about your art – your
style, subject matter, medium. Be as clear and as concise as possible.
No flowery language. Stick to writing about your technique, aesthetic
style and key influences. The more simply and clearly you describe
your ideas; the more likely people will understand you and your
work. Talk about what inspired you, how you made your new artwork,
use short and honest thoughts. Include any interesting technical
information, anything that will help understand your artwork. Make
it 100 words or less.

Next Demonstrator: Bob
Tonjes
July
9, 2008 from 7-9 pm
Next demonstrator: Bob Tonjes, “Reverse
Image on Glass in Acrylic”. Plan to attend the meeting
as this will be an interesting and informative demonstration.
My demonstration for the El Dorado Hills art group on July 9th
will be applying acrylic paint to the reverse side of glass - landscape
subject. The glass is framed and viewed through the non-painted
side. The finished image seems to float toward the viewer.
Robert maintains a studio in his home but also paints
on location. He has worked in all media but concentrates on watercolor,
and reverse painting on glass. He also worked as Creative Director
of Recreation Publications, Alameda, California. www.bobtonjesartist.com

Update on Josef Cordova drawing: Per Paulette
Van Schaik, the Josef Cordova painting for the drawing is
currently at the Fike Gallery and there has been very little activity. Dave
Williams from Hang It Up Galleries offered to hang it in their
gallery. Another suggestion was to add to Josef’s
bio that he is a young upcoming artist.
Treasurers Report – Don Nicolson: There
is a little over $4,000 in the EDHAA bank account and $193.40 in
the scholarship fund.
Scholarship Fund: Jimmie Grann hasn’t
received any call-backs from schools. Dave Williams offered
to help Jimmie contact the schools.

the Day on the Village Green event and is asking for volunteer
artists to demonstrate and help children create art using recyclable
items. The event will be held on June 28th from 10pm – 2pm.
Guest Artist: Paulette Van Schaik
and Sherry Huntting – “Use
of Tonal Values to Create Significant Art”
Paulette Van Schaik uses the under painting
technique employed by the masters since the Renaissance. It is done in monochrome
values similar to a black and white photo. Then layers of
transparent oil glazes are applied over these gray-green values
called verdaccio. The glazes give the work luminosity and
translucency, while the under painting enhances skin tones to create
high realism. This manner of painting, layering so-call over
lean, combined with the careful application of marbled gesso to
the panel surface produces art of the highest quality and durability
that is not obtainable with other painting methods.
Sherry Huntting is a graduate of Brigham Young
University and has been drawing and painting as long as she can
remember. She
was a fashion designer in Los Angeles prior to moving to Cameron
Park over 20 years ago. Beyond her college art classes,
she has taken art instruction from several other teachers. She
has had the privilege of having many years of instruction from
the nationally known “master Artist” Frank Covino. Sherry
has been the owner / instructor of Sherry Huntting Academy of classical
Realism in Cameron Park, since May of 2000. visit her website
to learn more about the academy and see the type of paintings she
produces and the work of her students. www.sherryhuntting.com
Paulette and Sherry talked about tonal values
of lightness or darkness of the subject that produce three dimensional
illusions. They recommend doing a black and white study of your
painting first to work out values.
The five keys of value:
Low key: 1,2,3
Intermediate key 4,5,6
High key 7,8,9
Major key High
Contrasting Value
Minor key Low
contrasting Value
Utilizing the five keys can create emotions in your paintings
such as peaceful, tranquil, strength, intensity, drama, serious,
happy, cheerful, gentle etc.
Value plays four essential roles in creating
successful paintings. 1)
Provides illusion of volume 2) Forms a powerful compostion 3)
Allows an image to be read from a distance 4) creates mood
and tone.
They illustrated how you can adjust values
and tones using their analyzing method. This can be done
by photographing your painting, taking it in Photoshop and changing
it to a black and white painting and experimenting and changing
the different values.
Paulette and Sherry’s presentation was
very interesting and enlightening and was thoroughly enjoyable.
