I've painted with watercolors for over 45 years, but daily for only the past 8 years. I have painted mostly landscapes, and more recently people, but really anything with interesting shapes, colors, and contrasts draws my attention. I love the drama that occurs while painting a watercolor and my current goal is to paint scenes with more emotional content (more loosely) and less of a literal tie to reality – very hard for me to do.
My process:

Almost all of my pictures start with a photograph that I’ve taken.
I do this since my fairly detailed style simply takes too long to create a good picture on site. I also don’t stick to what’s in the photograph. Often, I’ll add (or subtract) something that balances the picture or makes it more interesting. Most full-sized pictures (22 X 30) take 2 to 3 weeks to complete. This may change as I experiment with a looser style. I like Arches 140# and 300# cold pressed paper and use it for 80% of my paintings. When I want a more fluid or watery look to a picture then I use Fabriano or Arches hot pressed paper since the smooth surface lets the paint run and mix on the paper more easily. I’ve also done half a dozen pictures on Yupo, which is a plastic paper. Yupo is great for mixing colors right on the paper and provides brighter colors.

I like watercolors with strong contrasts. I do this by planning a picture carefully and drawing only enough detail to ensure that I’ll preserve the lights in the painting. I’ll mask off light areas if needed. Next, I usually wash in a very strong sky. If the sky is too light, it’s very difficult to change it later. The next step depends on the painting, but often I’ll put in a series of colorful light washes intended to show through the more deliberate brush strokes to give a picture an underlying energy and randomness. I often do this as the first step, but it varies. Early on I also like to identify areas of the painting that will require the strongest color and put them in early to ensure that the rest of the picture will be balanced and support the power of the more colorful strokes. If I don’t do this, I can find myself with a very carefully painted picture but one with a washed out or timid look. In this situation, adding the boldness of more powerful strokes runs a high risk of destroying a picture I’ve put a lot of time into. By putting the strong areas of the picture in early I automatically balance less important sections of a painting to match the strong strokes already on the paper. The last thing I do is to let a picture sit for a couple of days with no additional painting. If I’ve missed something, it usually becomes obvious to me when I take a fresh look at it. If it can hang on my wall for one or two weeks without me wanting to work on some part of it, then it’s done.

The Gallery is a great opportunity for members to show their work. The Gallery has 8 spaces for artists to show 3-5 works of art. Each group of artists will have their work in the Gallery for 2 months.

The next show, running July 15 - September 15 is full. There are 4 artists on the wait-list for September 15 - November 15. Artist Spotlight:
Leona Dang-Kilduff

I am a warm glass artist (kiln formed). This encompasses designing, cutting and kiln firing glass. Most of my pieces are functional (usable) plates, bowls, and such. I have recently received a Honorable Mention from the 2025 Northern California Arts.

My Training as a glass artist included classes at the ‘Sharon Arts Studio’, and “Public Glass’. Both studios are In San Francisco. I have also taken classes with Bullseye Glass. All these studios have encouraged me to experiment and play with glass. I have worked approximately 40 years in glass. The majority of my experience has been in warm glass.

I have sold my work inconsistently, in home décor shops, galleries, art shows, and community fairs.

I love the feel and play of light with glass. Most of my glass pieces are abstract and smooth. A large share of my work is in a Mondrian style. Recently, I have evolved to include more textual pieces. This style is aimed at a clientele that enjoy touching artwork. I am returning to this style in memory of my first husband, and now a brother, that are visually impaired.
Much of my work is functional. Meaning, most of my work encompasses bowls, plates, platters, and such. I love the concept of usable art. I believe the beauty of art should be part of everyday life. And, as described above, art should be accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities such as low vision and autism.

Dear Members,

Happy summer EDHAA members. There is so much to look forward to for EDHAA members in the coming months. Don’t procrastinate! It can be overwhelming if we don’t keep up with submitting applications for the many up and coming opportunities available to all EDHAA members. In preparation for the coming events, we ask that you submit the information required for any art show or event to EDHAA for our member library. We are asking every member to fill out your artist contact information, description of your art, 4 high resolution images (3 of your art, 1 of you at work in your studio), an artist bio and artist statement. With your permission, we may use your info for publicity opportunities, monthly demos, art shows and events, like those listed below.

Find the application HERE , fill it out and send it to: Lauren Klonaris: [email protected] & Leona Dang Kilduff: [email protected]

Good luck to all who entered. Rotating Art Display-EDHAA members may be asked to apply for an additional opportunity to display art in Marshall's in the less-trafficked locations. Cindy Abraham has volunteered to help coordinated this program, if it happens. We’ll let you know.

April 2026 - Gallery 48 Membership Show & Studio Tour Preview:
Planning for the EDHAA Membership Show & Studio Tour Preview. I contacted Marisa Sayago from Harris Center about our 2026 Membership Show and discovered the Gallery is booked through October. 2027. I asked Marisa to put us of the calendar for our 2027 Membership Show. I called Will from Gallery 48 to reserve the Hall Gallery for the Studio Tour Preview for 2026 and asked if we could also reserve the Gallery 48, to hold our Membership Show. He graciously allowed us to have two shows in Gallery 48 this year and it was one of our most successful Membership Shows. Thanks to Annie O’Connell and the Gallery 48 team! *Preview reserved. *Membership Show TBA.

Best Wishes to you all,
Judy
