Artists of the Month
Jack Nissen
My first venture into wood working began years ago when I wanted a nice cigar humidor. At the time that would have cost me about $500.
I thought to myself "Why should I pay $500 for a humidor when I can make one for myself for $1,200 or so?"
A table saw and numerous other tools followed closely.
I am self-taught as a wood worker and turner. (I did take one lesson on the lathe just to be sure that if I killed myself, I would do it in an unconventional way.)
I have made countless trips to the ER at Marshall. The last trip to the ER convinced me that a Saw Stop brand table saw was better than loosing a finger or worse. (If the spinning blade touches anything electrically conductive (wet wood, metal or flesh) within five milliseconds the blade drops below the level of the table top and is clamped to a dead stop. Worse case scenario, a small scratch.) I still have eight fingers and two thumbs, some not as nicely shaped as they once were.
I use as much salvaged wood as I can beg borrow or steal. To me "there ain't no such thing as firewood".
My work is displayed at the Gold Country Artists Gallery in Placerville where I have been a member since 2005 .
